The head of state and government is the president, who is elected every five years (most recently in May 2002). He appoints and heads a cabinet of ministers.

The Sierra Leonean parliament is unicameral, with 124 seats. 112 members are elected concurrently with the presidential elections; the other 12 seats are filled by paramount chiefs from each of the country's 12 administrative districts.

Local Government elections were held in 2004 (for the first time since 1972), electing 456 councillors sitting in 19 local councils.
